The Vizhinjam port became number one in the south and east in terms of the number of containers handled, a press release said.

In the west, Mumbai and Mundra are the biggest ports, but Vizhinjam is catching up because of its location and efficiency, an official said.

‘Automatic handling of the containers was one of the reasons we were able to handle so many containers in the first phase of the port. The port is yet to be completed, but still, we were able to handle a lot of containers. That’s a significant achievement compared to the other ports,’ the official added.

‘Our capacity was one million in phase one but each month we are handling above designated capacity.’ The port handled around 1 lakh containers last month. The number is scheduled to go up in coming months,’ said an official.
