Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) is preparing to hand over five acres of land from its Coconut Research Station (CRS) in Balaramapuram to Kerala State Industrial Enterprises (KSIE) for the development of a major logistics hub supporting Vizhinjam Port. The State government has initiated procedures to evaluate the proposal and has directed KAU to submit its remarks on the project submitted by KSIE.

According to a letter issued by the agriculture (farms) department on November 6, the government forwarded the detailed project proposal—focused on logistics infrastructure at the CRS land and maritime services linked to Vizhinjam—to the KAU registrar for examination. The proposal, drafted for the 2025–26 period, outlines an extensive infrastructure plan aimed at strengthening the emerging maritime ecosystem around Vizhinjam.

The identified land at Kattachalkuzhi, situated along the Balaramapuram–Vizhinjam Road and just 5.4 km from the port gate, provides direct access for 40-foot container trucks. As per the proposal assessed by TOI, the upcoming hub will feature over 50,000 sq ft of multi-user warehousing space, a Container Freight Station (CFS), consolidation and deconsolidation zones, value-added service units, administrative facilities, internal road networks and specialised storage, including potential cold-storage units.

KSIE had initially requested 15 acres from the university earlier this year for the project. University officials indicated that once formal notification is issued, revenue proceedings to transfer the land will begin. If completed swiftly, the facility will become the first CFS in the district, marking a significant boost to Vizhinjam’s expanding logistics landscape.
