The Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Port Rail & Ropeway Corporation Limited (IPRCL) to fast-track the development, upgradation, and renovation of seafarers’ welfare and associated maritime infrastructure across the country.

The MoU was signed on behalf of DG Shipping and the Seafarers Welfare Fund Society (SWFS) by Capt. Nitin Mukesh, Deputy Nautical Advisor-cum-Senior Deputy Director General (Technical) & Member Secretary (SWFS), DG Shipping. Capt. Arvind Kumar, Director (Transportation & Business Development), signed on behalf of IPRCL. The signing ceremony was graced by Shri Shyam Jagannathan, IAS, Director General of Shipping, who underscored the initiative’s importance in enhancing facilities for Indian seafarers.

Under this strategic partnership, IPRCL will act as the Project Management Consultant and Executing Agency, handling end-to-end support—from feasibility studies and Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) to project execution and commissioning. The scope includes civil, electrical, MEP, building works, and event-related infrastructure, ensuring all works meet prescribed technical and safety standards.

The agreement is expected to ensure timely and standardized implementation of welfare infrastructure projects, strengthening the support ecosystem for India’s maritime workforce.
