In a breakthrough move for sustainable maritime mobility, the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) is preparing to launch commercial operations of the country’s first indigenously built Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vessel. This pioneering initiative positions India at the forefront of clean energy adoption in the inland waterways sector.
The vessel—developed under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways’ ambitious green transition roadmap—represents a significant stride toward reducing carbon emissions and modernizing waterborne transport. Powered by cutting-edge hydrogen fuel cell technology, it promises zero-emission operations, minimal noise, and enhanced fuel efficiency, making it a game-changer for passenger and cargo movement across India’s vast inland waterways network.
Once commissioned, the vessel will not only demonstrate the viability of hydrogen-based propulsion in real-world conditions but also catalyse future investments, research, and policy support for green shipping. IWAI’s initiative aligns with India’s broader commitment to environmental stewardship, cleaner fuels, and sustainable maritime infrastructure.
The launch is expected to open a new chapter in India’s journey towards eco-friendly transportation, strengthening the nation’s resolve to build a resilient and future-ready inland water transport ecosystem.
