South Korean container carrier HMM has entered into a strategic partnership with Avikus and HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) to introduce advanced AI-based autonomous navigation technology across its fleet.

Under the collaboration, HMM will deploy HiNAS Control, an AI-powered autonomous navigation solution developed by Avikus, initially on 40 vessels. The system goes beyond conventional navigation assistance by autonomously determining optimal sailing routes, enabling improvements in operational efficiency while reducing fuel consumption and carbon emissions. Based on operational performance and accumulated data, HMM plans to gradually expand the application across its wider fleet.

The three companies will also jointly focus on the continuous development and advancement of AI-driven autonomous navigation technologies, leveraging real-world operational insights.

    As part of the partnership:

HMM will apply the solution onboard its vessels and provide real-world operational data to enhance system performance.

Avikus will supply and further refine the autonomous navigation solution.

HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering will support vessel platforms and contribute technical expertise related to ship design and systems integration.

The initiative aligns with HMM’s broader strategy to accelerate digital transformation and decarbonisation, reinforcing its commitment to building a smarter, more efficient, and environmentally sustainable maritime operation.
