The Visakhapatnam Port Authority has recorded a 10.34 per cent year-on-year increase in cargo handling for FY2025–26, underlining steady growth at one of India’s largest major ports.
The port handled approximately 90.3 million tonnes (MT) of cargo during the financial year, compared to around 82.6 MT in FY2024–25—marking its highest-ever annual throughput.
The growth was driven by improved performance across key cargo segments, including bulk commodities such as coal, crude oil, fertilisers and iron ore, along with a rise in container traffic. The increase comes amid ongoing efforts to streamline operations and enhance cargo handling efficiency.
Located in Visakhapatnam, the port serves as a vital gateway for industrial and mineral-rich hinterlands spanning Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Odisha.
Officials attributed the strong performance to better stakeholder coordination, operational optimisation, and infrastructure upgrades aimed at improving vessel turnaround times and cargo evacuation. During the year, the port also crossed key operational milestones, including handling over 80 MT in a record timeframe—signalling sustained momentum in throughput expansion.
With this performance, the port has positioned itself among the faster-growing major ports in India, even as the global shipping and logistics sector continues to navigate uncertainties and rising cost pressures.
