The Global Shipping Business Network (GSBN) alliance has called for accelerated adoption of electronic Bills of Lading (eBL) in India, highlighting the need to modernise trade documentation and improve supply chain efficiency.
GSBN noted that wider use of eBLs can significantly reduce paperwork, cut processing times, and enhance transparency across the logistics ecosystem. The alliance emphasised that digital documentation is critical for streamlining cargo movement, particularly as India aims to strengthen its position in global trade.
Despite growing awareness, adoption of eBLs in India remains limited due to regulatory complexities, lack of standardisation, and resistance to change among stakeholders. GSBN urged closer collaboration between government bodies, shipping lines, banks, and logistics providers to address these challenges.
The alliance also pointed out that eBL implementation can help reduce fraud risks, improve document security, and enable faster financing by providing real-time access to verified trade data. This is especially relevant for exporters and importers seeking quicker turnaround times and reduced administrative costs.
India has been taking steps toward digitalisation of trade processes, including initiatives under port community systems and logistics platforms. However, GSBN stressed that a more coordinated push is required to align legal frameworks and industry practices with global standards.
With global shipping increasingly moving towards paperless trade, GSBN believes that faster eBL rollout will enhance India’s competitiveness, reduce transaction friction, and support the country’s long-term export growth ambitions.
