Sarbananda Sonowal on Sunday said women’s participation in India’s maritime sector has increased by 340% since 2020, underscoring the government’s focus on inclusive growth and gender empowerment in the industry.

Speaking at the 10th Indian Ocean Dialogue in New Delhi, the minister said initiatives such as Sagar Mein Samman are helping advance dignity, inclusion and leadership opportunities for women across the maritime ecosystem.

Mr Sonowal said the rise in women’s participation aligns with India’s broader maritime vision of combining economic development with social empowerment. He noted that India is actively working towards building a secure, inclusive and prosperous Indian Ocean Region under the leadership of Narendra Modi.

The minister reiterated India’s commitment to collaborating with global partners to promote a safe, secure and stable Indian Ocean Region, while strengthening the country’s maritime capabilities and human resource development.
