India’s seafood exports reached a record value of ₹73,890 crore in FY26, marking the highest annual export earnings ever achieved by the country’s marine products sector. The strong performance was driven by sustained global demand, expanding market access, and higher shipments of value-added seafood products, with frozen shrimp continuing to dominate the export basket.
Frozen shrimp remained India’s leading seafood export product during the fiscal year, accounting for a significant share of both export volume and value. Strong demand from major markets such as the United States, China, Japan, the European Union, and Southeast Asian countries supported growth in shrimp shipments despite evolving trade and regulatory challenges.
The record export earnings underscore the growing importance of the seafood sector in India’s agricultural and food export landscape. Industry stakeholders attributed the achievement to improved aquaculture practices, increased production capacity, better quality standards, and investments in processing and cold-chain infrastructure.
Marine exporters also benefited from efforts to diversify export destinations and expand the range of value-added products offered to international buyers. Enhanced traceability systems, compliance with global food safety standards, and government support initiatives helped strengthen the competitiveness of Indian seafood in overseas markets.
Industry representatives welcomed the milestone, noting that the sector continues to generate substantial foreign exchange earnings while supporting millions of livelihoods across coastal states. They emphasized the need for continued investment in sustainable aquaculture, logistics infrastructure, and market development to maintain growth momentum.
With global demand for seafood expected to remain strong, exporters are optimistic about further expansion in the coming years. The sector is expected to focus on increasing value-added exports, exploring emerging markets, and enhancing sustainability practices to strengthen India’s position as one of the world’s leading seafood exporters.
