Gothenburg RoRo Terminal recorded a 5% increase in cargo volumes handled over the quay during the first half of 2026 compared with the same period last year, reflecting the impact of infrastructure investments and growing demand for regional freight transportation in Europe.

Located at the Port of Gothenburg, the terminal specialises in roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) cargo, including trailers and other wheeled units. Its frequent shipping connections link Sweden with major freight hubs in the United Kingdom and Central Europe.

The terminal handles a diverse range of commodities, including food products, forest products, steel, electronics and components for the automotive and engineering industries.

The volume growth follows several years of investment aimed at expanding capacity, improving operational efficiency and strengthening intermodal connectivity. In 2024, the terminal added 144,000 square metres of new operational space. It also integrated the Arken Intermodal Terminal, adding 65,000 square metres of terminal area and seven railway tracks to facilitate the transfer of trailers between trains and vessels.

Other improvements include new cross-docking facilities for steel and forest products, upgraded quay infrastructure and a deeper, wider approach channel that enables larger vessels to call at the terminal. In 2026, work was completed to upgrade berth 710, allowing larger vessels to use the facility and improving loading and unloading capacity.

The investments come amid increasing interest in short-sea shipping and regional European transport solutions. Geopolitical uncertainty, tariff disputes and disruptions to global supply chains are encouraging businesses to seek reliable alternatives to congested road freight corridors.

RoRo shipping offers an opportunity to shift cargo from roads to sea and rail, potentially reducing pressure on inland transport networks while supporting more sustainable freight movements.

Maria Franksen, CEO of Gothenburg RoRo Terminal, said the increase in volumes indicates that the terminal’s long-term investments in capacity, quality and efficiency are delivering positive results.

With further infrastructure upgrades planned, Gothenburg RoRo Terminal aims to strengthen its position as a key logistics gateway for Swedish industry and European freight movements.
