The Great Eastern Shipping Company Ltd (GE Shipping) has reportedly contracted to acquire a secondhand Very Large Gas Carrier (VLGC) with a cargo capacity of approximately 82,000 cubic metres, according to a market alert.
The proposed acquisition would strengthen the Indian shipping company’s capacity in the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) transportation segment. However, the vessel’s name, purchase price, age and expected delivery schedule have not been confirmed through an official company announcement or stock exchange filing.
VLGCs are designed to transport large volumes of LPG over long distances, connecting export terminals and production centres with major consuming markets. These vessels play a significant role in international energy supply chains, supporting the movement of LPG used for household cooking, industrial applications and other purposes.
The purchase of a secondhand vessel can enable a shipping company to expand its carrying capacity more quickly than ordering a newbuild, which typically involves longer construction and delivery timelines. The commercial viability of the acquisition will depend on factors such as the vessel’s age, technical condition, fuel efficiency, operating costs and prevailing freight market conditions.
GE Shipping operates across the tanker and dry-bulk shipping segments and has undertaken vessel acquisitions and disposals as part of its fleet management strategy. The reported VLGC contract will need to be assessed alongside the company’s existing gas-carrier fleet and any planned vessel sales to determine its impact on overall capacity.
Further details, including the financial terms and expected delivery date, are awaited. Until confirmed by the company, the transaction should be treated as a reported acquisition contract rather than a completed transfer of ownership.
