Commencing in fiscal year 2024, NYK is set to initiate extensive trials for the prolonged use of biofuels, recognized for their potential net-zero CO2 emissions, in the operation of its existing heavy oil-fired vessels.

Advancing beyond earlier short-term tests, NYK aims to meticulously assess the safety and secure procurement of biofuels during extended usage.

This comprehensive trial not only aims to establish a secure navigation system utilizing biofuels but also underscores NYK’s commitment to fostering biofuel development, aligning with the Group’s ambitious target of achieving a 45% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by fiscal year 2030 compared to fiscal year 2021.

According to a statement, during this trial phase, NYK plans to implement continuous use of biofuels for three months across various vessel types. Following this initial period, NYK intends to progressively extend the application of biofuels over an extended timeframe to conduct more in-depth validation and analysis.

Since fiscal year 2019, the NYK Group has engaged in short-term biofuel trials involving approximately 10 vessels. Although the company has confirmed the safety of brief biofuel usage, a thorough assessment of its impact on critical components such as the main engine, generator, motor, fuel supply system, and the quality of biofuels after extended storage has not been conducted.

On 6 November, NYK unveiled the NYK Group ESG Story 2023, introducing a fresh commitment to reduce the group’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 45% from the fiscal year 2021 baseline by fiscal year 2030.

In pursuit of this ambitious target, NYK is actively advancing this trial to validate the integration of biofuels, furthering its contribution to achieving the set environmental goals.
