The European Commission has approved €194m ($211.4m) in investment aid to support the construction of an offshore wind terminal at the Port of Gdansk.
The new terminal will serve as an installation terminal to build offshore wind farms. The beneficiary of the investment is the Polish firm Istrana which will build the terminal. The aid will take the form of a direct grant and will be funded through the Recovery and Resilience Facility.
The planned investment meets Poland’s strategy to develop offshore wind farms with a total installed capacity of 11GW by 2040 and 5.9GW by 2030. The new terminal will handle the installation of the main components for offshore windfarms with a 5GW maximum capacity.
The total investment cost of the project is €253m. The remaining part of the investment awarded €194m will be covered by Istrana’s funds.
The terminal is expected to be operational in 2026 and will be operated under a lease between Istrana and the port authority ZMPG until 2055.
According to the EU Commission, the new terminal is expected to make a significant contribution to the region in terms of job creation, in segments directly or indirectly related to the wind farm industry.
