DP World has strengthened capabilities at the Mundra International Container Terminal (MICT) in Gujarat with the addition of a new state-of-the-art Quay Crane and three electric Rubber-Tyre Gantry Cranes (e-RTGCs), marking a significant step forward in capacity enhancement and sustainability.

The advanced Quay Crane, capable of handling vessels 22 rows across, equips Mundra to service some of the world’s largest container ships with greater efficiency and reliability. Featuring predictive maintenance planning, wider CCTV coverage for enhanced operator awareness, and energy-efficient drive systems, the crane improves safety, precision, and overall operational productivity. With this new equipment, DP World Mundra now operates eight quay cranes, enabling faster vessel turnarounds and improving service consistency. The expansion is expected to increase the terminal’s handling capacity to 1.56 million TEUs by 2027.

Alongside the Quay Crane, the deployment of three new e-RTGCs boosts the terminal’s fleet to 31 units and is projected to cut Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 18.9%. The electric cranes also help reduce noise pollution and support the company’s broader decarbonization strategy. These efforts align with India’s Harit Sagar guidelines, which target 50% electrification of port equipment by 2030 and 90% by 2047 at major ports. DP World is further accelerating electrification across its Mundra operations with electric light motor vehicles, forklifts, and the planned introduction of electric internal transfer vehicles.

Reinforcing its green credentials, MICT has secured ‘Zero Waste to Landfill’ certification from the National Productivity Council and meets a portion of its energy requirements through renewable sources via International Renewable Energy Certificates. These local sustainability initiatives contribute to DP World’s global ambition of achieving net zero carbon emissions across its value chain by 2050.

Ravinder Johal, Chief Operating Officer – Ports & Terminals, Operations & Commercial, Middle East, North Africa & India Subcontinent at DP World, said the upgrades reaffirm Gujarat’s strategic importance as a trade gateway and support India’s aspiration to emerge as a global leader in sustainable trade.
