The government has initiated a study to assess the feasibility of using the Gurupura River and Nethravati River for cargo transportation, exploring the potential of river-based logistics to improve connectivity and support regional trade.

The assessment will examine the possibility of developing inland water transport routes for moving goods, with a focus on reducing pressure on road networks and creating more efficient freight movement options.

The initiative is expected to evaluate factors such as navigability, infrastructure requirements, cargo potential, and integration with nearby ports and logistics hubs. Improved river connectivity could provide an additional transport channel for industries located along the coastal Karnataka region.

The move aligns with broader efforts to promote multimodal logistics and expand the use of waterways as a cost-effective and sustainable mode of cargo transportation.

If found viable, cargo operations through the Gurupura and Nethravati river systems could enhance regional supply chains and strengthen Karnataka’s maritime and logistics ecosystem.
