Nepal’s tea industry is steadily gaining ground as a vital contributor to rural employment and foreign exchange earnings, particularly in eastern districts like Jhapa and Ilam. Supporting over 60,000 jobs, the sector produces both orthodox and CTC (Crush, Tear, Curl) teas, which are increasingly attracting international buyers.

In the fiscal year 2081/82, Nepal’s tea exports surpassed NPR 4.59 billion, while imports remained minimal, reflecting the country’s growing potential in the global tea market. However, most exports still pass through India as raw or semi-processed products, limiting opportunities for domestic value addition and higher returns.

Industry experts stress that stronger branding, enhanced local processing, and direct exports to third countries are critical for Nepal to unlock greater revenue and secure international recognition for its tea.

With these measures, Nepal aims not only to boost rural livelihoods but also to position its tea as a premium product on the world stage.
