Tiruchirappalli Airport has proposed a major expansion project worth Rs 350 crore aimed at extending its runway to 12,500 feet, alongside significant upgrades to air traffic control (ATC), solar power infrastructure, and cargo handling facilities. The project is part of a broader plan to modernize the airport, improve operational efficiency, and accommodate larger aircraft and higher passenger and cargo volumes.
The runway extension will allow Tiruchirappalli Airport to handle bigger long-haul aircraft, opening new opportunities for international connectivity and boosting regional economic activity. Simultaneously, the ATC upgrades are expected to enhance air traffic management and safety, while the cargo facility improvements will support faster and more efficient handling of freight, including perishable goods and industrial cargo.
In line with India’s focus on sustainable aviation, the airport is also implementing solar energy projects to reduce carbon emissions and operating costs. Officials noted that the combination of runway expansion, technological upgrades, and renewable energy adoption will position Tiruchirappalli Airport as a modern, high-capacity aviation hub in southern India.
Industry experts say the development could attract more airlines and logistics operators, strengthen regional trade, and create additional employment opportunities in airport operations, logistics, and ancillary services. The project reflects ongoing efforts to modernize India’s mid-sized airports to meet growing passenger demand and support the country’s aviation growth ambitions.
