Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, has released an IIM Calcutta publication titled “The Hydrogen Pivot: Orchestrating the Green Transition at V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority”, showcasing the port’s transformation into a sustainable and future-ready maritime hub.

Published by the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, the case study documents the journey of V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority from a conventional cargo-handling facility to a leader in green energy and sustainable maritime development.

The publication highlights the port’s initiatives in renewable energy adoption, electrification, and the implementation of India’s first Green Hydrogen Pilot Project at a major port. It also outlines VOC Port’s long-term vision of developing a comprehensive green hydrogen ecosystem to support decarbonisation and sustainable growth in the maritime sector.

The release ceremony was attended by Vijay Kumar, Secretary, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways; Susanta Kumar Purohit, Chairperson of VOC Port Authority; Rajesh Soundararajan, Deputy Chairperson of VOC Port Authority; and Ramya T. Venkateswaran.

The case study is expected to serve as a reference for public-sector institutions and maritime stakeholders seeking to accelerate the transition towards cleaner energy and sustainable port operations.
