Swiss Post is reinforcing its position in the growing goods logistics market with the inauguration of a highly automated warehousing logistics centre at its Villmergen site. The CHF 137 million investment is part of the “Swiss Post of tomorrow” strategy, aimed at expanding the company’s domestic and international logistics capabilities.

The new centre features three modern warehousing systems capable of handling a wide variety of product formats. Swiss Post now stores products, compiles orders, manages shipping, and oversees customs clearance on behalf of its customers. The facility also supports healthcare logistics, storing medical products—including medicines, surgical instruments, and knee prostheses—under strictly controlled conditions certified by Swissmedic and aligned with Good Distribution Practice (GDP) quality standards. This ensures that healthcare products are delivered reliably, safely, and quickly to hospitals and clinics across Switzerland.

Johannes Cramer, Head of Logistics Services and Member of Executive Management at Swiss Post, highlighted the strategic importance of the centre: “By developing Villmergen, we’re making targeted investments in the future of logistics in Switzerland. The new centre has all the features of cutting-edge warehousing logistics: the latest technology, sustainability, and growth capacity. By offering 100 new jobs and seven apprenticeships, we’re creating opportunities for our employees while accommodating large and complex goods.”

Located in the Canton of Aargau, the centre benefits from excellent connections to Swiss and European transport networks, enabling fast processing and distribution of goods from both domestic and international sources. Dieter Egli, President of the Cantonal Council and Head of the Department of Economic Affairs, praised the development: “A well-functioning logistics infrastructure is essential for a modern society. I’m delighted that the logistics centre in Villmergen has been expanded with innovative technologies. This will support our companies, strengthen the local economy, and enhance Aargau’s attractiveness as a business location.”

Sustainability is a key focus of the project. The upgraded photovoltaic system generates over 1,300 MWh annually, covering four-fifths of the centre’s energy needs, setting new standards for eco-friendly logistics infrastructure in Switzerland.

Through this investment, Swiss Post is not only strengthening its goods and healthcare logistics capabilities but also shaping the future of logistics in Switzerland with innovative technology, sustainability, and growth potential.
