This weekend a protest group called Rising Tide aims to create the largest peaceful civil disobedience protest for climate action in Australia’s history at the world’s largest coal port in Newcastle.
Thousands of people are due to come together to blockade ships for 30 hours.
“We’re demanding that our governments stop allowing new coal projects, and instead tax fossil fuel export profits at 75% to fund community and industrial transition, and pay for climate loss and damage,” a release from the group states.
The flotilla blockade will begin at 10.00 hours local time on Saturday morning, finishing at 16.00 hours the following day. Organisers are anticipating more than 3,000 people to attend the protest.
In related news, the Australian police said Wednesday that 23 people had been arrested at an unauthorised pro-Palestine protest against Israeli liner company ZIM at Port Botany.
