Denmark-based shipping and logistics major A.P. Moller – Maersk has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Chinese battery manufacturer Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. (CATL) to accelerate decarbonization across global supply chains.

The MoU was signed on October 9 in Hong Kong and builds on a five-year collaboration between the two companies across ocean transport, intermodal services and logistics solutions. CATL is one of the world’s largest suppliers of electric vehicle batteries.

Under the new agreement, Maersk will act as CATL’s global logistics partner, providing integrated services including ocean and air freight, project logistics and warehousing. Both sides will explore scalable models across different markets to support CATL’s supply chain stability.

The partnership will also focus on joint projects such as the electrification of container shipping and port ecosystems. These initiatives will be supported by electric system engineering, energy management and end-of-life battery recycling solutions.

Maersk said the collaboration will reinforce its own decarbonization strategy, which targets net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across all operations by 2040. The company, which owns a fleet of more than 700 vessels, is pursuing a multipronged approach involving green fuels and energy-efficient technologies.

Earlier this month, Maersk launched an efficiency program for its time-chartered fleet, aiming to retrofit around 200 ships in cooperation with 50 shipowners to enhance fuel efficiency and reduce emissions.
