Indian Railways has successfully delivered its first full freight rake to Anantnag in Jammu and Kashmir, marking a major milestone in rail-based logistics to the Kashmir Valley. The rake, comprising 42 wagons carrying over 2,700 metric tonnes of rice, reached Anantnag on January 22, the Railways Ministry said in a statement.

Loaded at the Sangrur rail terminal in Punjab on January 21, the consignment was transported to Anantnag within 24 hours, demonstrating the operational strength and efficiency of the region’s all-weather rail connectivity.

According to the ministry, the successful movement underscores the reliability of rail transport in ensuring an uninterrupted supply of essential commodities, particularly food grains, even during adverse weather conditions. The development is expected to significantly reduce logistics costs while improving supply chain resilience in the valley.

Officials said the achievement has given a major boost to the food grain distribution network in Jammu and Kashmir and reinforces Indian Railways’ role in supporting economic activity and food security in the region.
