DP World-controlled Avana Logistek has agreed to acquire the SSL Brahmaputra, the largest container vessel in the Transworld Shipping Lines fleet, for $11.4 million. The transaction is part of Transworld’s ongoing fleet monetisation strategy and further strengthens Avana’s container-feeder fleet.
The vessel is understood to have a capacity of approximately 4,250 TEU, making it the largest containership previously operated within Transworld’s fleet. The agreement was signed on August 7, 2026, with completion subject to delivery.
Avana expands feeder fleet
The acquisition adds further capacity to Avana Logistek, which operates containerised coastal and EXIM feeder services in the Indian subcontinent. Avana is part of the wider Unifeeder platform under DP World.
DP World acquired Avana Logistek and Transworld’s feeder operations in 2020, integrating the businesses into its broader feeder and regional shipping network.
The addition of SSL Brahmaputra is expected to support Avana’s ability to deploy larger feeder capacity on regional services, particularly on routes linking Indian ports with major transshipment hubs.
Transworld continues fleet rationalisation
For Transworld Shipping Lines, the deal represents another step in its strategy of reducing its vessel holdings and monetising shipping assets.
The company has agreed to sell several container vessels in recent months. In June, it completed the sale of the 2,872-TEU SSL Gujarat to Avana Logistek, while additional vessels have also been placed under sale agreements.
The latest transaction allows Transworld to unlock capital from one of its largest assets while maintaining its broader focus on ship ownership and logistics-related activities.
Strengthening India’s feeder network
The purchase also highlights the continuing consolidation of India’s container-feeder sector. Feeder vessels play an important role in connecting smaller and regional ports with major transshipment hubs, allowing cargo to move efficiently between local markets and international mainline services.
Avana’s wider network provides connectivity across the Indian Subcontinent, Middle East and Asia, while DP World’s port and logistics infrastructure gives the group an integrated presence across multiple stages of the supply chain.
With the acquisition of SSL Brahmaputra, Avana is set to increase its fleet capacity while Transworld continues to streamline its vessel portfolio. The transaction underscores the growing role of larger feeder vessels in supporting regional container trade and improving connectivity between Indian ports and global shipping networks.
