India’s Commerce Ministry will meet industry associations and export promotion councils on September 1 to review the country’s trade performance with the United States and discuss recent developments in bilateral trade. The meeting will be chaired by Additional Commerce Secretary Darpan Jain, who is also India’s chief negotiator for the bilateral trade agreement .

The discussions will cover recent trade trends, sector-wise performance and key developments in India-US trade. Representatives from pharmaceuticals, engineering, textiles, agriculture, chemicals, marine products, leather, automobiles, auto components, handicrafts and plastics are expected to participate. Major industry bodies including CII, FICCI, Assocham and FIEO are also likely to join.

The consultations come ahead of Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal’s planned US visit in late September for the G20 Trade Ministerial, where he is expected to hold bilateral discussions with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.

India and the US are continuing negotiations on a bilateral trade agreement, with New Delhi seeking a tariff position that gives Indian exporters a comparative advantage over competing suppliers such as Bangladesh, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia.

India’s exports to the US reached $87.31 billion in FY2025-26, while imports stood at $53.45 billion. During April-July 2026-27, exports to the US increased 3% to $34.5 billion, while imports rose 22.42% to $22.12 billion.

The government’s engagement with exporters is expected to help identify sector-specific concerns and strengthen India’s position as negotiations with Washington continue.
