India accounts for around 8% of global gems and jewellery exports, highlighting the country’s established manufacturing capabilities and strong position in the international jewellery supply chain, according to NITI Aayog.
The sector has developed into a major export-oriented industry, supported by India’s skilled workforce, established processing ecosystem and extensive network of jewellery manufacturers and exporters. The country is particularly recognised for diamond cutting and polishing, gold jewellery manufacturing and other value-added processing activities.
India’s large manufacturing base enables exporters to serve markets across North America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. The industry also benefits from specialised clusters and supporting businesses involved in processing, design, refining, logistics and certification.
The global share highlights the importance of gems and jewellery to India’s merchandise exports. The sector provides significant employment across manufacturing and associated activities, while also generating demand for skilled craftsmanship and value-added services.
However, the industry continues to face challenges including volatile precious metal prices, changing consumer preferences, international trade barriers and increasing competition from other manufacturing centres.
Strengthening technology adoption, product diversification, branding and access to international markets could help Indian jewellery manufacturers increase their participation in global value chains.
The sector’s existing export footprint provides a base for further expansion, particularly in markets where demand for Indian-designed and manufactured jewellery is growing. Continued policy support and improved market access are expected to remain important for sustaining the competitiveness of India’s gems and jewellery industry.
