Southern Railway has approved lift-on, lift-off (Lo-Lo) container handling at the Group I goods shed in Tiruchirappalli, with the permission taking effect from October 9, 2026, creating an additional rail freight option for central Tamil Nadu.

The facility will allow containers to be transferred between road vehicles and railway wagons without unloading their contents, potentially enabling logistics operators to combine road transport with rail freight for longer-distance movements.

However, the approval is an operational clearance and does not include the announcement of a dedicated container train service, operating frequency or initial cargo commitments. The viability of container movements will depend on cargo demand, handling infrastructure, train availability, transit times and road connectivity for first- and last-mile transportation.

The Tiruchchirappalli railway division provides a substantial freight base for the initiative. The division loaded 13.24 million tonnes of freight during 2025–26, crossing the 13-million-tonne mark for the fourth consecutive year and ranking first among Southern Railway’s divisions. Between April and July 2026, it handled approximately four million tonnes and generated goods revenue of ₹2.25 billion.

These figures represent the division’s overall freight performance and do not indicate container volumes at the Trichy goods shed. The container terminal commissioned at Peralam goods shed is a separate facility.

The development also coincides with plans for a proposed Multi-Modal Logistics Hub in Tiruchirappalli district. The Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) issued a request for proposals on October 8 to appoint a consultant to prepare a feasibility report and examine project-structuring options.

The proposed study will assess a site of at least 30 acres, cargo demand, connectivity, stakeholder requirements and economic viability. Feeder collection and consolidation centres are also proposed at Villupuram, Salem and Madurai to support cargo aggregation across the region.

The consultancy assignment is expected to conclude within 28 weeks of contract signing, excluding review time, while the final site selection remains pending.

The container-handling approval and the proposed logistics hub could support the development of integrated road-rail freight solutions for central Tamil Nadu, subject to cargo aggregation, infrastructure readiness and commercially viable service arrangements.
