Bangladesh is stepping up efforts to reduce emissions from the maritime sector by focusing on ports and shipyards as key areas for driving cleaner and more sustainable shipping practices.

The country’s emerging green shipping strategy aims to improve environmental performance across maritime operations through measures such as cleaner technologies, energy efficiency improvements, and upgraded port infrastructure.

Ports and shipyards are expected to play a central role in supporting the transition toward lower-carbon shipping by encouraging the adoption of modern vessel technologies and sustainable operational practices.

The initiative comes as the global shipping industry faces increasing pressure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and align with international decarbonisation targets. Bangladesh is looking to strengthen the competitiveness of its maritime sector while addressing environmental challenges.

With growing trade volumes and increasing reliance on sea transport, the country sees greener maritime development as an important step toward building a more sustainable logistics network and improving long-term shipping resilience.
