Hapag-Lloyd has announced an increase in its Peak Season Surcharge (PSS) for container shipments on the North Europe–United States trade lane, reflecting continued demand and evolving market conditions during the peak shipping season. The revised surcharge will apply to cargo transported on the carrier’s services connecting major North European ports with destinations across the US.

The surcharge is intended to help offset higher operating costs associated with seasonal cargo surges, network capacity management, and equipment repositioning. Peak Season Surcharges are commonly introduced by shipping lines during periods of strong demand to maintain service reliability and ensure the availability of containers and vessel space.

The revised PSS will affect a broad range of containerized cargo, including manufactured goods, machinery, chemicals, consumer products, and retail merchandise moving between Europe and the United States. Exporters and freight forwarders are expected to factor the additional cost into their logistics planning and shipping budgets.

The announcement comes as transatlantic trade remains active, supported by steady industrial production, retail demand, and resilient supply chains. Ocean carriers continue to adjust pricing mechanisms, including peak season and congestion-related surcharges, in response to changing cargo volumes, operational costs, and market dynamics.

Industry analysts expect carriers to closely monitor demand trends throughout the peak season and make further adjustments to freight rates or surcharges if market conditions warrant, while shippers continue to seek cost-effective and reliable transportation solutions on the North Europe–US corridor.
