Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal has said that India’s maritime sector continues to remain robust and efficient despite ongoing global geopolitical challenges, reaffirming the government’s commitment to safeguarding trade interests and ensuring uninterrupted supply chains.
Chairing a high-level review meeting on port operations and cargo movement, the Minister stated that timely interventions and continuous monitoring by the government have helped clear nearly 90% of the backlog cargo at major ports that had accumulated due to disruptions arising from the West Asia crisis.
Sonowal emphasized that coordinated efforts among port authorities, shipping stakeholders and government agencies enabled the rapid stabilization of port operations, minimizing the impact on trade and logistics activities across the country.
“The government remains committed to protecting trade interests by all means possible and ensuring that supply chains remain sustainable and resilient, regardless of geopolitical developments,” he said.
The Minister noted that proactive measures taken by the Ministry and port authorities have helped maintain operational efficiency at major ports, ensuring the smooth movement of cargo and supporting India’s growing trade requirements.
The review meeting assessed the current status of cargo clearance, port productivity and supply chain continuity, with a focus on strengthening preparedness against external disruptions and maintaining seamless maritime operations.
