Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has signalled its growing interest in cold chain logistics with the acquisition of a stake in CKL, marking a strategic move to expand beyond traditional shipping into temperature-controlled supply chains.

The investment underscores MOL’s intent to tap into the fast-growing cold chain segment, driven by rising demand from pharmaceuticals, food processing, agri-exports and e-commerce. By partnering with CKL, a specialist in cold chain logistics, MOL aims to strengthen end-to-end capabilities covering refrigerated transportation, warehousing and integrated logistics solutions.

MOL said the buy-in aligns with its medium- to long-term strategy of diversifying revenue streams and building value-added logistics businesses linked to global trade and consumption trends. The collaboration is also expected to create synergies by combining MOL’s global network and operational expertise with CKL’s domestic cold chain know-how.

Industry observers see the move as part of a broader shift by global shipping lines toward logistics verticals offering stable growth and resilience, particularly in sectors requiring specialised handling and infrastructure.

Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed.
