Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has received official approval to begin construction of a new container terminal at the Port of Baltimore, a move that signals a significant expansion of the port’s capacity and MSC’s presence on the U.S. East Coast.

The permit, issued by local and state authorities, clears the way for MSC to develop a modern, high-capacity terminal designed to handle larger container vessels and growing trade volumes. The project is expected to boost throughput, improve efficiency, and attract additional shipping lines to Baltimore.

MSC officials said the terminal would incorporate state-of-the-art infrastructure, including automated container handling systems, expanded berths, and enhanced logistics facilities, aimed at supporting the port’s long-term growth.

“The new Baltimore terminal represents a major investment in the region’s supply chain and underscores MSC’s commitment to the U.S. market,” said a company spokesperson. “It will enhance connectivity, reduce congestion, and strengthen trade links with global markets.”

The Port of Baltimore, strategically located on the East Coast, has experienced steady growth in container traffic over recent years. The new terminal is expected to create jobs locally, stimulate economic activity, and support regional import-export operations.

Construction is slated to begin in the coming months, with phased operations expected within the next few years. Officials emphasized that the project will adhere to environmental and regulatory standards, with measures in place to minimize ecological impacts.

This development marks another milestone in MSC’s global terminal expansion strategy, complementing its existing network across Europe, Asia, and the Americas.
