Samskip, a provider of global logistics solutions, and the market-leading shipyard Cochin Shipyard in India have commenced the construction phase of their next-generation zero-emission shortsea container vessel, the Samskip SeaShuttle.
“When it comes to sustainability, we believe in transparency, setting goals and taking responsibility. Yesterday, at our event, we introduced our Sustainability Compass to accelerate our ESG goals and called everyone out to work together towards these goals,” stated Laurens Dourleijn, sustainability manager at Samskip.
In addition, representatives from both companies, governmental bodies, and partners celebrated the commencement of construction at Cochin Shipyard in India with the official steel-cutting ceremony for the Samskip SeaShuttle.
This vessel, the first of two under contract, marks a significant milestone as the world’s inaugural Zero Emission Short Sea Container Vessel fueled by Green Hydrogen. The hydrogen-powered Samskip SeaShuttle aims to establish green corridors between the European continent and the Scandinavian region.
Furthermore, anticipated to reduce approximately 25,000 tons of CO2 annually in zero-emission mode, both SeaShuttles will also implement green shore power for emission-free operations while docked at ports.
Samskip organized “The Samskip Sustainability Day” on 29 February, bringing together a varied audience including maritime experts, representatives from municipalities, customers , politicians, and suppliers for a collaborative think tank forum.
The event, attended by 150 guests, focused on the returning theme of breaking boundaries and fostering collaboration to embrace a new era of sustainable logistics, as highlighted in numerous presentations and discussions throughout the day.
