Hon’ble Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, inspected the Guard of Honour at Chennai Port and formally flagged off the India International Regatta Program at Bharathi Dock, marking a significant moment for maritime sports and youth engagement in the country.
The event formed part of the 11th India International Regatta, one of Asia’s premier youth sailing championships, which brings together young sailing talent from India and abroad. The regatta is expected to play a crucial role in nurturing future champions, strengthening sailing infrastructure, and positioning India as a hub for competitive maritime sports in the region.
During the programme, students of Swabodhini School for Special Children extended a warm and joyful welcome to the Hon’ble Minister. Their participation underscored the Chennai Port Authority’s ongoing commitment to inclusive growth and community development. Swabodhini School, renowned for offering high-quality training in an empathetic and supportive learning environment, serves as a testament to the port’s social responsibility initiatives.
The event was organised under the banner of “Viksit Ports, Viksit Bharat”, a flagship initiative aimed at aligning port-led development with the national vision of inclusive and sustainable growth. The programme was jointly organised by Kamarajar Port Limited and Chennai Port Authority on January 8, 2026.
Addressing the gathering, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal delivered the keynote address, underscoring the Government of India’s focus on promoting maritime sports, encouraging youth participation, and integrating ports as vibrant centres of economic, social and sporting activities. He emphasised that initiatives such as the India International Regatta not only build sporting excellence but also foster discipline, teamwork and global exposure among young Indians.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from officials, sailors, students and stakeholders, reinforcing Chennai’s growing stature as a centre for maritime excellence and youth-centric initiatives.
