India’s largest airline, IndiGo, has appointed veteran aviation executive William “Willie” Walsh as its next Chief Executive Officer, confirming he will take charge in early August 2026. Walsh’s appointment follows the resignation of former CEO Pieter Elbers earlier this month.

The Board of InterGlobe Aviation Limited, which operates IndiGo, said Walsh — currently Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) — will assume the CEO role after completing his tenure at IATA on July 31, 2026 and join IndiGo no later than August 3, 2026, subject to regulatory approvals.

Walsh brings decades of global airline leadership experience to India’s largest carrier. He began his aviation career as a pilot and later served as CEO of Aer Lingus, British Airways, and the International Airlines Group (IAG) — the parent company of British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus, Level and Vueling.

IndiGo’s leadership transition comes at a pivotal time for the airline. In recent months the carrier has faced operational challenges, including significant flight cancellations that drew regulatory scrutiny and contributed to the departure of Elbers. Walsh’s appointment signals the board’s focus on stabilizing operations, enhancing strategic growth efforts, and strengthening the airline’s international footprint amid intensifying competition and global market volatility.

The airline currently holds a dominant share of India’s domestic market while expanding its international network. Walsh’s extensive experience navigating complex airline operations and multinational strategy is expected to support IndiGo’s next phase of growth as it seeks to balance expansion with operational resilience.
