Walmart announced on Monday its strategic collaboration with three India-based startups—KBCols Sciences, GreenPod Labs, and Cropin—through pilot programs aimed at transforming its U.S. supply chain and sourcing operations. These partnerships were initiated after the startups participated in the Walmart Growth Summit last year.

The pilot programs are set to explore innovative solutions to improve product availability, extend freshness, reduce waste, and enhance sustainability. They also aim to address critical manufacturing challenges, such as the environmental impact of synthetic dyes in textiles.

The Chosen Innovators and Their Solutions

    1. KBCols Sciences (Pune): Specializing in the production of non-GMO natural dyes, KBCols Sciences uses agricultural waste to create sustainable alternatives to synthetic dyes . These dyes require less water and energy during the manufacturing process, making them a greener option for mass textile production. The pilot program will test KBCols’ dyes on materials such as woven fabrics and jersey cotton, assessing their performance and
potential scalability. Vaishali Kulkarni, CEO of KBCols Sciences, commented, “The collaboration with Walmart marks a pivotal step towards transforming the textile industry with more sustainable dyeing solutions.”

    2. GreenPod Labs (Chennai): GreenPod Labs develops sachets containing plant extracts that activate natural defense mechanisms in fruits and vegetables, slowing ripening and preserving freshness. This innovation could open up new sourcing geographies for Walmart, enable cost-effective shipping, and deliver fresher produce to customers. In partnership with UC Davis, Walmart will evaluate the effectiveness of GreenPod’s sachets in extending the shelf life of perishable goods. Deepak Rajmohan, CEO of GreenPod Labs, said, “Working with Walmart validates our efforts in reducing post-harvest losses and improving produce quality. It’s been a great learning experience interacting with their sourcing and innovation teams.”

    3. Cropin (Bengaluru): Cropin provides an AI-powered AgTech platform that delivers insights into crop yields, health, and seasonal transitions. Walmart’s pilot will utilize this technology to enhance productivity, optimize resource usage, and improve the availability and quality of perishable commodities.

Cropin’s platform can help reduce waste and enhance supply chain efficiency by improving data accuracy. Krishna Kumar, CEO of Cropin, stated, “By working with Walmart, we aim to build resilient and sustainable food systems leveraging next-generation technologies like AI.”

Kyle Carlyle, Vice President of Sourcing Innovation & Surety of Supply at Walmart, highlighted the importance of these collaborations, saying, “Tech innovation drives real-world solutions for a globally resilient supply chain. By working with global innovators, we’re leveraging fresh ideas to build a stronger, more sustainable network.”

The Walmart Growth Summit, held in countries like India, Mexico, and Chile, serves as a platform for entrepreneurs to present innovative solutions aligned with Walmart’s goals of sustainability, efficiency, and innovation. Through pitch sessions and discussions, startups gain opportunities to integrate their technologies into Walmart’s global supply chain.

These partnerships underscore Walmart’s people-led, tech-powered approach to addressing supply chain challenges. The company’s focus on fostering global innovation aims to drive meaningful change across industries, from food to textiles, ensuring a more sustainable and efficient future for retail operations.
