Trelleborg Marine and Infrastructure has introduced Smart Docking Aid System (SmartDAS) , an advanced berthing monitoring technology designed to enhance safety, efficiency, and sustainability in port operations worldwide.
SmartDAS detects vessels up to 200 metres away and captures critical data such as distance, velocity, and longitudinal angle. All information is stored securely in the cloud with remote access and integrated with an Automatic Identification System (AIS) to automatically match vessels with berthing records.
This enables operators to analyse trends, optimise procedures, and base decisions on actual performance rather than assumptions. The system operates autonomously with minimal energy consumption.
According to Trelleborg, safety is enhanced through configurable alarms that alert operators when approach parameters exceed safe thresholds. Mobile LED display boards can provide real-time feedback to vessel pilots, which is particularly valuable in poor visibility or challenging conditions.
The system’s continuous monitoring reduces the need for constant human oversight while safeguarding both vessels and infrastructure.
Operational efficiency is boosted by SmartDAS’s ability to generate detailed reports, replay historical berthing sessions, and identify optimisation opportunities. It provides site-specific berthing data recommended in PIANC WG 211 guidelines, supporting more accurate infrastructure design and enabling optimised, cost-effective fender solutions.
Sustainability benefits arise from data-driven infrastructure decisions, which help prevent over-design and reduce material consumption. The technology’s preventative approach can extend the lifespan of port assets, lower emergency repair costs, and support proactive maintenance.
Optional integration with Trelleborg MetOcean sensors allows operators to correlate environmental conditions with berthing performance for further optimisation.
SmartDAS is a key element of SmartPort by Trelleborg, a technology platform that connects data-driven assets across the port environment, giving stakeholders a holistic view of operations. By delivering actionable insights and supporting evidence-based decision making, SmartDAS represents a significant step forward for ports aiming to optimise berthing, protect infrastructure, and advance sustainable practices.
Trelleborg Marine and Infrastructure secured a contract to deploy its advanced AutoMoor technology at one of the world’s leading container terminals in China. This collaboration marks the first time an automated mooring system will be introduced at a port in China.
