In a major stride towards sustainable maritime development, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, Hon’ble Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, released the Compendium on Green Hydrogen Plant at VOC Port on Friday. The publication showcases the pioneering efforts of VOC Port in advancing India’s green hydrogen ambitions and underlines its role in shaping a cleaner, self-reliant energy future.

The compendium chronicles VOC Port’s journey in setting up the country’s first-of-its-kind port-based green hydrogen facility. It captures the success story of the initiative, the methodology adopted in developing the plant, and the challenges faced during execution, while also presenting a clear roadmap for the future.
Speaking at the launch, Shri Sonowal commended the Port Authority’s vision, stating that VOC Port has positioned itself as a front-runner in India’s maritime decarbonisation efforts. “Green hydrogen is not just an alternative fuel, but a game-changer for sustainable shipping and industrial growth. VOC Port’s initiative reflects the government’s commitment under the National Green Hydrogen Mission and will inspire other ports to adopt similar clean energy solutions,” he said.
The compendium also details the technical framework of the project, including electrolysis-based hydrogen production using renewable power, integration of storage and distribution systems, and pilot applications for port operations and allied industries. It documents how VOC Port overcame challenges such as technology adaptation, infrastructure readiness, and cost optimisation.
Highlighting the “Voyage Forward”, the publication emphasizes the potential of green hydrogen to power cargo handling equipment, tugboats, and future green shipping corridors, while also opening up new avenues for green industry clusters in the Tuticorin region.
VOC Port, strategically located on the southeastern coast of India, has emerged as a testbed for clean energy adoption in the maritime sector. Its green hydrogen initiative is aligned with India’s broader goals to reduce carbon intensity, achieve energy independence, and make Indian ports global benchmarks for sustainability.
The release of the compendium marks a significant milestone, not only for VOC Port but also for India’s journey towards becoming a hub for green fuel production and export.
