In a significant achievement for regional trade and connectivity, Sittwe Port welcomed its 200th vessel, M.V. Shwe Paing Phyo, which berthed carrying 1,283 metric tonnes of cargo. This milestone highlights the growing importance of Sittwe Port as a key hub under the Kaladan Multimodal Transit Transport Project (KMTTP)—a flagship initiative to boost maritime and inland waterway connectivity between India and Myanmar.
The arrival of M.V. Shwe Paing Phyo not only strengthens port operations but also underscores the expanding opportunities for bilateral trade and commerce. Since the commencement of operations, Sittwe Port has steadily built its reputation as a gateway for seamless movement of goods, supporting both economic development and regional cooperation.
The Kaladan Multimodal Transit Transport Project, an India-Myanmar collaboration, aims to provide an alternative connectivity route to India’s northeast via Myanmar, reducing dependence on the narrow Siliguri Corridor. The project integrates maritime, river, and road transport, linking Sittwe Port to Paletwa in Myanmar through the Kaladan River and further connecting to India’s Mizoram state by road.
Officials emphasized that this milestone reinforces the project’s role in enhancing supply chain efficiency, facilitating cross-border trade, and unlocking new opportunities for local communities. It also demonstrates the commitment of both nations to promoting #IndiaMyanmarFriendship through robust infrastructure development and vibrant port-led growth.
The steady progress at Sittwe Port reflects its growing operational capacity, efficiency in cargo handling, and potential to serve as a vital economic artery fostering stronger India-Myanmar relations and greater regional integration.
