The Alabama Port Authority has placed an order for two Konecranes Rubber-Tyred Gantry (RTG) cranes to support its upcoming intermodal facility in Montgomery, Alabama.
The order was recorded in Q3 2025, with delivery expected in Q4 2026.
Container throughput at the Port of Mobile increased from approximately 502,000 TEUs in 2021 to over 563,000 TEUs in 2023.
Anticipating further growth, the Alabama Port Authority is developing the Montgomery Intermodal Container Transfer Facility (ICTF).
The two RTGs will form the core of container handling operations at the ICTF, facilitating efficient transfers between rail and road transport.
The RTGs are equipped with Active Load Control technology to prevent container sway, alongside a suite of Konecranes Smart Features designed to enhance operational safety, speed, and automation readiness.
Features such as Auto-steering, Auto-positioning, and Auto-TOS Reporting integrate seamlessly with the terminal operating system (TOS), ensuring precise container placement and efficient operation.
Additional safety and efficiency measures include Stack Collision Prevention, Auto Path Optimizing, and Auto-Truck Guiding, which directs road vehicles for container pick-up and drop-off.
This order marks the Alabama Port Authority’s first investment in Konecranes RTGs, building on a relationship that began in 2001 with the delivery of a Konecranes Gottwald Mobile Harbour Crane.
That crane remains in active service, handling both containerised and breakbulk cargo.
Doug Otto, Interim Director and CEO of the Alabama Port Authority, said: “The reliability of Konecranes equipment in our operations has encouraged us to expand this partnership.
“These new cranes will enhance efficiency and handling capacity as we launch the intermodal terminal and scale up our operations.”
Alan Garcia, Director of Regional Sales Americas at Konecranes Port Solutions, added: “This agreement reflects the trust customers place in Konecranes for critical performance and reliability. We are committed to supporting the Alabama Port Authority in this new greenfield development.”
Recently, the Port of Cartagena ordered 25 Konecranes Rubber-Tyred Gantry cranes (RTGs), along with retrofits for 10 existing RTGs to enable supervised operations.
