The Coastal Police at Fort Kochi have launched an investigation after a merchant ship, MSC Silver II, reportedly collided with a fishing boat, Prathyasha, in the outer sea off Kochi on Wednesday evening.

According to police, the incident occurred around 5.30 pm when the vessel brushed against the side of the fishing boat. Alerted by nearby fishing boats, the ship’s crew slowed down, averting a potential tragedy. Fishermen aboard Prathyasha were forced to jump into the sea to save themselves.

The fishing boat sustained damage, and its nets were destroyed. While no injuries were reported, the boat owners have complained to the coastal police. “We have received the complaint and initiated an investigation. A formal case will be registered only after the facts have been verified,” a police source said.

Meanwhile, Jackson Pollayil, president of the Kerala Swathanthra Matsya Thozhilali Union, alleged that the vessel was sailing outside the designated shipping lane. “The designated lane is nearly 20 km away from where the accident occurred. Authorities must ensure the safety of fishermen and their boats,” he stated.

The fishermen are currently assessing the extent of the damage.
