Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) added another milestone to its growing reputation as one of India’s most advanced air cargo hubs by welcoming the Antonov An-124 Ruslan, one of the largest and heaviest cargo aircraft in the world. The arrival of the aircraft not only drew the attention of aviation experts and enthusiasts but also demonstrated RGIA’s ability to handle highly complex and large-scale cargo operations.

The Antonov An-124, powered by four high-thrust turbofan engines, is renowned for its exceptional long-range capability and ability to transport oversized, heavy, and specialized cargo. The aircraft is frequently deployed for transporting military equipment, aerospace components, massive machinery, and humanitarian aid across continents. With a payload capacity of over 120 tonnes and a unique nose-opening cargo loading system, the An-124 remains a global workhorse in heavy-lift logistics.

The successful landing and handling of the aircraft at RGIA underscores Hyderabad’s growing prominence in global cargo connectivity. The airport’s world-class infrastructure—including its long runway, advanced ground handling systems, and specialized cargo terminals—played a critical role in supporting the operations of such a large aircraft. Airport officials ensured seamless coordination between air traffic control, ground handling teams, customs, and security personnel to facilitate safe and efficient handling.

Aviation enthusiasts gathered near the airport vicinity to witness the spectacular touchdown of the giant aircraft, capturing photos and videos of the rare appearance. For many, it was a thrilling experience to see the massive Antonov An-124 up close, as such aircraft visits are infrequent and typically reserved for high-priority or specialized missions.

Officials from GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd. (GHIAL), which operates RGIA, highlighted that the arrival of the An-124 reflects the airport’s capability to manage the most demanding airlift requirements. They emphasized that RGIA continues to invest in cutting-edge infrastructure, technology-enabled cargo processing, and streamlined logistics to support global trade.

Hyderabad has emerged as a strategic logistics hub due to its central location, connectivity to major international destinations, and strong presence of pharmaceutical, aerospace, and manufacturing industries. The airport’s cargo terminal is known for its efficiency in handling temperature-sensitive, high-value, and oversized cargo.

With the successful handling of the Antonov An-124, RGIA has once again proved why it is counted among the premier cargo gateways in the region. The event adds to the airport’s growing list of achievements and reinforces its role in enhancing India’s position in global air freight operations.
