Valenciaport maintained steady container traffic in September despite a slight year-on-year (YoY) dip, while volumes for the year-to-date (YTD) and on a rolling 12-month basis posted solid growth driven by rising trade with China and the US.

Activity at the port for the first nine months rose by 3.6 per cent to 4.28 million TEUs, and on a rolling 12-month basis, total throughput increased 5.2 per cent to 5.6 million TEUs.

According to the Statistical Office of the Port Authority of Valencia (PAV), combined import and export cargo across Valencia, Sagunto, and Gandia ports reached over 6.3 million tonnes in September, down 8.05 per cent compared to the same month last year.

Cumulative cargo from January to September totalled more than 60.3 million tonnes, a 1.41 per cent decline, while the 12-month rolling figure stood at nearly 79.8 million tonnes, down 1.01 per cent.

Vehicle traffic stabilised in September with 47,136 units loaded and unloaded, a slight 0.8 per cent decrease from August.

Year-to-date figures show 372,224 vehicles handled, with 526,232 units over the past 12 months.

China and the US remain Valenciaport’s leading trade partners. In 2025 to date, container volumes with China increased 15.19 per cent to 622,313 TEUs, with cargo tonnage up 8.87 per cent to over 6.6 million tonnes.

The US also strengthened its position, handling 290,458 containers (+7.06 per cent) and more than 4.5 million tonnes (+7.06 per cent).

Algeria is the third-largest market by TEUs (240,407 units, +34.9 per cent), while Italy leads the US in cargo weight with over 5 million tonnes handled.

Last month, PAV awarded a concession to a consortium — Ership, Intersagunto, and CGCA — to construct and operate a new solid bulk terminal (excluding clinker and cement) at the Port of Sagunto.
