Taiwanese container shipping company Wan Hai Lines has submitted a bid to acquire Terminal C9 at the Port of Osaka, in a move aimed at strengthening its presence on key intra-Asia trade routes, particularly between Japan and Taiwan.

The acquisition, reportedly valued at around $87 million, would give Wan Hai a strategic foothold in one of Japan’s busiest container gateways, enabling the carrier to secure capacity, enhance schedule reliability, and optimize handling efficiency.

Industry analysts note that owning or controlling terminal operations is part of a broader trend among major carriers, including Hapag-Lloyd and ONE, who have also invested in terminal stakes to support their global networks. For Wan Hai, this move represents a critical step in expanding its terminal operations and competitive position in the regional shipping market.

“The Osaka terminal is a key asset for carriers looking to strengthen intra-Asia connectivity,” said a shipping analyst. “Wan Hai’s bid aligns with its long-term strategy to secure infrastructure and improve operational control along core trade lanes.”

The Port of Osaka is a vital hub for container traffic in western Japan, handling millions of TEUs annually and serving as a gateway for exports and imports across Asia. Wan Hai’s potential ownership of Terminal C9 would mark a significant expansion of the carrier’s terminal portfolio in the region.
