Global container shipping major Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has been fined $22.7 million for improper billing practices, following findings that the carrier engaged in unfair and misleading charging behaviour.

Regulators said the violations included incorrect invoicing, failure to adhere to published tariffs, and billing practices that resulted in undue costs for shippers. The fine underscores heightened scrutiny of carrier conduct amid ongoing concerns over transparency and compliance in the container shipping industry.

Industry observers said the penalty sends a strong signal to ocean carriers on the need for strict adherence to billing rules, especially as authorities worldwide continue to tighten oversight of shipping lines’ commercial practices.

MSC has not publicly commented on the ruling, while shippers welcomed the move as a step toward improving accountability and fairness in ocean freight billing.
