Container congestion at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), India’s busiest container gateway, has begun to ease following a series of relief measures introduced to tackle cargo disruptions linked to the ongoing Iran–Israel conflict.
Port officials said the number of stranded export containers has dropped significantly after coordinated efforts between port authorities, shipping lines, customs officials, and exporters. Emergency measures included prioritizing evacuation of time-sensitive cargo, streamlining documentation procedures, and improving coordination with logistics operators to accelerate container movement.
The congestion had built up as shipping schedules were disrupted and exporters delayed cargo movements due to uncertainty in West Asian trade routes. Industry sources noted that improved clarity in shipping operations and proactive steps by the port authority helped clear a large portion of the backlog.
Officials added that JNPA continues to monitor the situation closely and remains prepared to introduce additional operational measures if disruptions in regional shipping routes persist. The developments highlight the port’s critical role in maintaining the flow of India’s international trade during periods of geopolitical uncertainty.
