In a landmark moment for the global container shipping industry, Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has become the first carrier in the world to operate a fleet of 1,000 vessels, according to consultancy Linerlytica.
The milestone was achieved with the delivery of the 11,480 TEU MSC Migsan from Zhoushan Changhong shipyard in China, pushing MSC’s fleet into four-digit territory for the first time in container shipping history.
Privately held MSC, already the world’s largest container line, has seen extraordinary expansion over the past few years. Its fleet capacity has now reached approximately 7.3 million TEU, making it about 57% larger than its closest competitor, Maersk. Notably, MSC’s capacity is nearly equivalent to the combined fleets of Hapag-Lloyd, Ocean Network Express, Evergreen Marine, and HMM.
The milestone coincides with a significant leadership transition within the company. Founder Gianluigi Aponte, now 85, has transferred ownership of the business empire to his children, Diego Aponte and Alexa Aponte.
“Passing ownership to my children is not only a reflection of their dedication and achievements, but also a continuation of our family’s centuries-long maritime heritage,” Aponte said.
Founded in 1970 by Aponte in Naples, MSC overtook Maersk five years ago to become the world’s largest container shipping line. Its rapid ascent has been particularly notable since 2020, aligning with the strongest bull run in container shipping history.
“What is remarkable about MSC’s achievement is the uncanny timing of its growth since 2020, which coincided with the biggest bull run the container shipping market has ever seen. And it was done almost entirely through organic growth without any large-scale acquisitions,” said Hua Joo Tan, co-founder of Linerlytica.
The Aponte family, long associated with MSC’s rise, is ranked among the world’s wealthiest, frequently listed among Switzerland’s richest families on the Forbes billionaires index.
MSC’s latest milestone not only underscores its market dominance but also signals a new chapter under second-generation leadership, as the company continues to expand its global footprint across container shipping and cruise operations.
