Türkiye is accelerating development of the Mersin rail link as part of efforts to strengthen a key freight corridor connecting the Gulf region with Europe. The project aims to enhance multimodal connectivity by integrating rail infrastructure with port operations, positioning Mersin as a strategic gateway for east–west trade flows.

Authorities are prioritising upgrades to rail capacity, efficiency, and cross-border connectivity to facilitate faster movement of goods between the Gulf and European markets. The initiative is expected to reduce transit times, lower logistics costs, and offer an alternative to congested maritime routes.

Industry stakeholders view the Mersin rail project as a significant step toward diversifying regional supply chains and improving trade resilience. Once operational at scale, the corridor could attract higher cargo volumes and reinforce Türkiye’s role as a critical logistics hub bridging Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.
