In a landmark step for the Sultanate’s maritime sector, Hutchison Ports Sohar has taken delivery of a fleet of electric terminal trucks (eTTs), becoming the first port facility in Oman to deploy such zero-emission vehicles for container handling operations.

The fleet, built by Chinese technology firm Westwell, marks a significant milestone in Sohar Port’s ongoing decarbonisation efforts. Rolled out on April 30, 2026, to coincide with Logistics Day 2026, the deployment underscores the terminal’s commitment to sustainable and technologically advanced operations.

The first phase includes 15 electric terminal trucks designed to enhance operational efficiency, reduce manual labour intensity, and cut emissions. These next-generation vehicles are purpose-built for port logistics, supporting the transition toward automated, low-carbon “smart port” ecosystems. Plans are already in place to expand the fleet, alongside investments in charging infrastructure and maintenance facilities.

Each eTT is powered by a 282 kWh battery, offering a driving range of up to 150 kilometres. The trucks support rapid charging and feature fully automated battery swapping, which can be completed in just five minutes—ensuring seamless, round-the-clock operations. In addition to eliminating emissions, the vehicles operate with minimal noise and are equipped with advanced driver-assistance systems and ergonomic cabins to improve safety and comfort.

The deployment further strengthens Sohar Port’s sustainability roadmap. The container terminal has already achieved full electrification of key equipment, including quay cranes, empty container handlers, and reach stackers. It now targets a 90% reduction in Scope 1 carbon emissions by 2030, with ambitions to reach net carbon neutrality by 2050 in alignment with national climate goals.

Hutchison Ports Sohar is a joint venture between Hutchison Ports, Rakiza, and other Omani investors, and continues to position itself at the forefront of sustainable port innovation in the region.
