The textile hubs of Coimbatore and Tirupur together account for nearly 55% of India’s total knitwear exports, reinforcing their position as key drivers of the country’s apparel export industry. Industry representatives said the strong contribution from the two Tamil Nadu-based clusters has been supported by robust manufacturing capacity, integrated supply chains, skilled labour availability and growing global demand for Indian garments.
Tirupur, widely recognised as India’s leading knitwear export centre, continues to play a major role in shipments to markets including the US, Europe and the Middle East, while Coimbatore supports the sector through spinning, processing and textile manufacturing activities. Exporters said increasing focus on sustainability, compliance standards and product diversification has also helped the region remain competitive in global markets.
Industry stakeholders have called for continued policy support, improved logistics infrastructure and faster implementation of trade agreements to further strengthen India’s knitwear exports amid rising competition from other Asian manufacturing nations.
