The long-awaited connectivity project linking Chennai Port and Maduravoyal is expected to be completed by November 2027, providing a major boost to cargo evacuation and urban transport infrastructure in Chennai.

The elevated corridor project is designed to improve direct freight movement between the port and the city’s national highway network, helping reduce congestion on key urban roads frequently used by container trucks and commercial vehicles. Once operational, the corridor is expected to significantly cut transit time for cargo moving to and from the port.

Officials said construction activities are progressing across multiple sections of the project, which has long been viewed as critical for improving logistics efficiency in one of India’s major maritime gateways. The corridor is expected to streamline container transportation and enhance connectivity with industrial clusters and inland logistics hubs.

The project has faced multiple delays over the years due to land acquisition challenges, alignment revisions, regulatory clearances, and coordination issues among various agencies. However, renewed focus on infrastructure execution and port connectivity has accelerated progress in recent months.

Industry stakeholders noted that the dedicated elevated corridor will help reduce turnaround time for trucks, lower logistics costs, and improve operational efficiency for exporters, importers, and shipping lines using Chennai Port. Reduced traffic congestion within city limits is also expected to provide environmental and urban mobility benefits.

The corridor forms part of broader efforts to strengthen multimodal logistics infrastructure and improve last-mile connectivity to major ports across India. Enhanced road connectivity is increasingly viewed as essential for supporting growing container traffic and improving the competitiveness of Indian ports.

Trade and logistics industry representatives said the project could substantially improve cargo handling efficiency at Chennai Port and support future trade growth once completed.
